"Folk will know how large your soul is, by the way you treat a dog." - Charles F. Doran

Fostering (n): encouragement; aiding the development of something; to foster (v): To bring up; nurture; cherish

Fostering is a way to help a dog in need.  A foster home is more than just a shelter for a homeless lab.  Foster homes provide socialization as well as daily interaction with people and possibly other pets.  In many cases, foster parents help their foster adjust to the good life indoors with housetraining as well as teaching basic good manners to prepare their foster for their new home.

We have experienced volunteers who can help fostering families if there is any question or concern regarding their foster, and veterinary care for the foster dog is provide by LFS.

Fostering should not be used as a trial period to determine if you want to adopt a dog permanently, and fostering is not a means of getting a dog for free.  Please keep in mind that the ultimate goal of a foster parent is to prepare their foster dog for their new life with a loving family who needs them just as much as the dog needs the family.  Fostering is a way to help a dog in need, not to help yourself go for a test drive.

Top 5 Reasons to Foster

1.  Fostering is rewarding for everyone involved.  LFS strives to make the best match between our labs and the adopting families, and when you see how your foster and the adopting family connect, you'll cry tears of joy, not of sorrow.  Seeing your foster adopted to another caring family who will love your foster is always a heartwarming experience.

2.  Fostering allows a lab that is in boarding to live in a real home environment instead of living in a boarding facility.  More importantly, a dog's home should not be defined by the materials used in its construction, but rather the social interaction of their daily lives, which allows them to show their love and enthusiasm for people and the simple things in life like belly rubs and labby kisses.

3.  Fostering saves lives.  A new foster home means additional room in the rescue program to save another lab from certain death in the numerous kill shelters in Georgia and the surrounding states.

4.  Fostering helps LFS continue their effort to rescue labs in need and help people find the right pet.  Boarding costs alone make it difficult to keep up with the ever increasing costs of running a non-profit organization.  Foster homes are essential to any rescue group's success in saving the lives of these beautiful and loving creatures and bringing happiness to both the labs and their adopting families.

5.  Fostering for LFS means you have the option of adopting your foster lab.  Bonding with and loving your foster lab is likely to happen, and if you decide that you cannot part with your foster, LFS will fully support your decision to adopt your foster.

Please consider the best interest of these wonderful labs.  Yes, we miss our fosters when they leave, but the joy and excitement of finding a forever home with that perfect family, above and beyond outweighs the Goodbye.
