Text Box: Dog Tips
Text Box: Jumping up is a big problem for many dog owners. The most common mistake is to yell at the dog and push him off. This just reinforce the dog to jump up more as he has just obtained what he wanted: your attention! The best way to train a dog out of jumping is to ignore the jumping up and "hyper" greetings (remove the reward). When you come home and your dog is happy to see you; jumping-up, running circles at your feet and running around the house, completely ignore him! He will soon realize that he is not getting anywhere with this behavior and stop. Once he is calm, gently pet him and give him a treat. Arriving home should be as relaxed and low key as when you leave the house (see previous issue of the newsletter).

The year started well for LFS with some good adoptions, and some exciting events including, as all the dogs know, the most exciting of all, the arrival of snow! For some of our Atlanta residents this was the first snow ever and a great adventure. The Giants won the Superbowl and Eli Manning signed our raffle goodies for Lisa. We are all waiting to see who the winner will be.  Because we are never tired of getting the name of LFS out there, we have committed to organize the first Ryleys Run in Georgia. Help us make this the best dog run in Atlanta.

New Year Resolutions

Text Box: Our Friends Fund Thank You

In 2007 we started the Friends Fund to recognize all the people that are helping us saving more and more dogs. Everyone has been very generous since the beginning of this new year especially to help Lisa. We thank the following people for their generosity last month:

Bronze Bone level: Elizabeth Fox and Karen Hall for Lisa.

Silver Bone level: Ellen Star for Lucky and Shatka, Heather Couris and Amber Paul for Lisa.

Gold Bone level: Clare Ranney for Lily’s new life, Pam Boulanger.

Platinum Bone level: Kelly Sherrill and Mack, Steve Greenfield, Richelle and Scott Southwick and Houston, and Clare Ranney for Lisa.

Diamond Bone Level: Clare Rannery for Lily’s new life, Gregory Breen and Mark Bell for Lisa. David Green and Barbara Tinsley in honor of  Vet Gary Bullard of Bullard Animal Hospital in Atlanta.

Where is your money going?

The money you generously donated so far went to:

· Pumpkin kidney’s tests. He is doing well and he is ready for a permanent home!

· Vetting, spaying or neutering of the dogs we took in this month!

· Lisa vet bill. She is now out and into a foster home. And she is coming to adoptions to show off how well she is doing.

As little as $10 can make a difference! Donate today.

Text Box: The big raffle for Lisa is in full swing

Labrador Friends has just committed to organize the first Ryleys Run in Georgia. Ryleys Run started a few years ago in New York State and California and it is now quickly getting organized in many states. The goal is to soon have one yearly run in each state to benefit different rescues. We have decided that we want to host the first Ryleys Run in Georgia so we have committed ourselves to this big event. The race will be sometime in October. We are determined to make this a great event so we are looking for diligent volunteers to be in the organizing committee for the race. If you are interested in getting involved please email Angela at mrsjergler@yahoo.com. We will also be looking for sponsors, volunteers for the day and, of course, runners. Email us if you have any ideas. This is a great chance to start something big, so get involved and…. start training with your dog!

Text Box: A letter from Angel’s new mom

Miss Angel has settled in quite nicely and wasted no time making herself at home.  Her and Indygo have been inseparable since we brought her home and have got along extremely well. She is quite the snuggler and not shy about where she wanted to sleep. At night she paces the edges of the bed until we give her the okay to jump up and then she snuggles right in between Rene and me. When they aren't in bed with us it is so cute to see them

sharing the same dog bed even though they each have their own.  She also is not completely house broken so we are crate training her which she is responding well to.  It is no surprise she is a chewer, after all, she is a LAB!  So, we bought her an arsenal of toys which she loves and hoards!  Unfortunately we bought them a day late after she chewed a shoe, carpet and the stairs!  Oh well.  Anyone who owns a lab (or any dog for that matter) and thinks that these things aren't going to happen is only kidding themselves.  She is also super protective of our daughter, Faith, which was immediate and that makes me happy.  Faith woke up crying the first night Angel was with us and Angel pounced on me in bed and ran up stairs to her then back to make sure I was coming.  She behaves like this anytime Faith cries and that warms my heart. I thank you all for all you do and taking Angel in and giving her an opportunity at a second chance.   Kim

Our raffle to pay for Lisa’s vet bill and sponsor her future surgery is in full swing. If you have not done so, buy a few tickets and try your luck to win a football signed by the 2008 Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, the quarterback for the New York Giants, or a Super Bowl program signed by the championship team. Tickets are $5 each or three for $10. Tickets can be purchased on line through midnight on February 29. The drawing will be held on Saturday, March 1. Read here for more information.

Text Box: Ryleys Run is scheduled for October 2008.

There are time when a foster dog touches your heart and you cannot let him/her go. This past December, both Fatima and Hickory were adopted on Christmas day by their foster two legged siblings. Fatima was declared the best Christmas gift ever while Hickory even sent us a letter:

First.. thank you for taking me in, making me healthy and getting me into foster care.  Today was the big day for me. Last night I got a new collar and tag.  Boy did it feel good one me.  So this morning the tree was lit.. Santa had come and there I rested on my UGA bed with my brand new UGA collar near the tree.  My buddy came running around the corner, I was a bit nervous, he stopped looked at me, his mouth hung open and then he jumped on the dog bed with me.  I new I was special but it was great to know how excited he was to adopt me (Yeah my collar even says I am his).  We opened all the presents together.  I get to sleep in his room and play outside with him forever.. thank you. Hickory

Text Box: I need your recommendations

I need your recommendations!  I am compiling a list of recommendations for our dog owners living in the greater Atlanta area. Do you have a favorite dog park? A favorite day care facility? A favorite boarding place? What is your favorite thing to do on Sunday morning with your dog? Send me an email with anything you would like to share. I will compile a list and post on one of the next newsletters and the website. Share your best tips with other LFS adoptee.

Millie is a great little dog, ready for a forever home. She is fully housebroken and in fact  has the free use of the entire house when her foster mom is not at home. She loves to play with other dogs and she loves to snuggle, but she can also be by herself if needed. She loves toys especially if they still squeak! She rides well in a car, she is good on a leash, and she is always eager to please you. What can I say, Millie is the perfect dog for someone who wants a dog who is already housebroken and gets along with everyone. Millie would be perfect for a family with small kids…It will be hard to find a more perfect dog!

Hickory and his forever buddy Owen.
