Bellamy – Adopted 12/08/2018

Happy Gotcha Day Bellamy!

MEET BELLAMY: This pretty black female Labrador is around 6 years old. She was just saved from the shelter with her “brothers,” Manny and Bo, after their owner passed away. Bellamy is currently working on her figure. She tops the scales at around 97 pounds right now, but we hope to get her down closer to 80. Bellamy is a pretty lazy girl but can be active when she wants to be. We’re sure once she sheds some of that extra weight, she’ll be feeling much better and ready to run around. Bellamy gets along well with other dogs and was happy to be reunited with her brothers in the interaction pen at the shelter. She doesn’t seem to be particularly attached to either one of them, so we think she just enjoys having company. Bellamy isn’t a super fan of the summer heat and preferred to sit in the shade (smart girl!), but was happy to be petted and loved on. She is understandably confused about where she is right now, so she wasn’t interested in toys, but we think with a little time, she’ll come out of her shell and show us more of her personality. Bellamy walks well on the leash and would love to be your next walking partner! We think she’d make a great addition to any family!

FOSTER UPDATE 9/10/18: Fostering Bellamy has been the easiest foster I have ever had!  She is calm, completely house trained, and full of love.  I’ve had moments when I just get so tickled by her.  She loves to sleep on the couch, but she’ll ask for permission to get on the couch before she makes the jump.  If I happen to be laying down, she loves to squeeze in and lay down between me and the back of the couch.  She is an expert chow hound.  She’s got “that look” down to an art.  You know that look.  The one that makes you want to surrender whatever you’re eating to her, but she’s not demanding when she begs.  She does not know her “sit’ command.  I’m taking advantage of her chow hound ways to train her, and she’s getting the hang of it.  She responds immediately and appropriately when I tell her “no” to something.  Bella is not crate trained, and I don’t see any reason for her to be crated.  I introduced her to a crate, but she decided that wasn’t a place she wanted to be.  She shows no signs of separation anxiety, and is not a chewer, except of things you have given her.  The only concern I have had with her is she has attempted to bolt out the front door and I have to watch that.  She spends most of her time around the people or dogs in the house, but from time to time I will find she wanders away to be alone, usually sleeping under one of the tables in my office or dining room.  She has a sweet disposition, and loves to have her belly and chest rubbed.  She’d be a great addition to a home looking for a middle aged, cuddly companion to hang out with.

PUPDATE 9/10/18!! Bellamy attended the our adoption event this past weekend and was perfectly behaved! She hopped right into the car and did great on the ride there. At the event, she was quiet, just taking in the fun of the day. She loved our volunteer’s 11 year old grandson and took to him quickly. Bellamy met all the other adoptable dogs and got along great with all of them. Most of the time, she just hung out in the shade, quietly resting near our volunteer’s chair.

Bellamy would be a great addition for any family looking for a more “mature” lab. She is mild-mannered and past that puppy stage. She’d love to have a kid to bond with and call her own!

Bellamy’s diet is going well so far, and while she’s enjoying doggie daycare, she would really love to have a foster home!

UPDATE 9/5/18!! Bellamy is ready to find her forever home!! She has been placed on a diet and is doing well so far! She’s a food hound for sure, so we can definitely understand how she got so big. Bellamy has been coming out of her shell and is really enjoying all the attention she’s getting. She loves doggie daycare and is having a great time hanging out with the other dogs and people. You can really tell that her personality is coming out, and she’s no longer scared and confused. When Bellamy gets excited, she bounces up and down and sometimes “smiles” at you. It really is the cutest thing! She seems to be kennel trained, but we’re not sure about house-training yet. She has not used the bathroom inside at the vet clinic, so that’s promising! Bellamy knows sit and walks well on the leash. She could probably use a refresher course in basic obedience. She is a relatively mellow dog, but we think she gets tired easily because of her weight. Soon she will start shedding those pounds and will be able to be more active! She will need to go to a home that is willing to continue her diet and exercise, but we think Bellamy would make a great addition to any family!
